In this section I share a small snippet or update from my life to share some learnings
This week I am reflecting on a beautiful live event I ran in Adelaide last weekend. The room was filled with the sound of people connecting about their dreams, confidence and refocusing their energy on the future and what they can create.
I shared stories from my own journey with the group to remind everyone that although everything in life isn’t always okay, you can always be okay no matter what happens to you. It’s the stories we tell ourselves about what is happening that influences whether we are living a nightmare or a dream.
Even in teaching this work I have to catch myself and the stories I tell myself. That is, what I make things mean. You see, it’s never the thing. It’s always the way we think about the thing. If you’ve ever read Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search For Meaning you will know that it’s not the circumstance that makes life hard but the way we perceive it.
For myself personally, I’ve shared about my ups and downs over the years navigating the world of fertility. I thought it would be something that happened easily for us. But when it hasn’t been that way I actually caught myself telling myself a story that I wasn’t able to help people because I can’t do the one thing women are meant to do. What a load of crap hey. But these stories can run deep. They can be born from our beliefs, out programming, what we learnt makes us worthy. Women have been linked to being mothers for centuries. So my new story is that if I can navigate a personal challenges like this then I can help others navigate any challenge.
I don’t believe in the illusion that everything is always going to be okay. We all die, ageing is inevitable. But my mission is to ensure that no matter what happens in life, you will be okay.
In this section I guide you through an NLP, Coaching or Hypnotherapy tool to help you apply to your life.
This month’s tool is about self awareness of your inner dialogue and thoughts. You see, we can get addicted to FEELING and THINKING certain thoughts. They become well engrained neural pathways of thinking and emotion and it starts to feel like what is NORMAL even if it’s not the way we desire to live.
Notice something stressful or unuseful or heavy you have been saying to yourself this week. Is it “I am too busy” or “They are better than me” or “I am tired” and notice the story you are telling yourself.
Is it an unuseful story, a pattern, excuse or belief that is holding you back? Usually these patterns are what I call surface level statements. These statements often go unquestioned.
Lateral thinking expands us to thinking of new solutions and new outcomes in life. I want you to notice something you have said or thought to yourself and now, think of 3 or 4 other things that may also be true.
For example, instead of I am too busy. Start thinking of 3 to 4 other things you can tell yourself. Like, I am managing a lot right now and I have the capacity to handle it. I could ask for help in the following ways. I have all the time I need to succeed. I spend my time and energy on the things that matter most to me. These stories are lighter, they allow you space and time to breathe. They open up new pathways of thought and potential.
Our ingrained patterns of thought become well worn freeways of thinking. And sometimes you need to open up a new dirt track to create new options of thought.
The moment you expand your thinking, you expand your neurology and you expand your potential in life. Because your words create your world.
You are the common denominator for all your experiences in life so if you want a better life, tell yourself a better story. This is not to say to diminish the real things that are happening, but where we focus is what we find. If we look for things to feel abundant and grateful for we really do find them.
So what stories are you telling yourself about what’s possible, about your life, and about your potential?
In this section I provide some journaling and self-reflection activities:
- What is an unuseful story I’ve been telling myself about my health, finances or life?
- What is a new story I can start saying today?
- What would benefit if that story were true.
